Finger Food for Little Fingers…Who needs a fork?

If you are preparing a party for children who are very young, ensure that there are lots of brightly coloured bowls on the table filled with foods of different shapes, colours and textures to draw the attention.

Sandwiches have to be small and appealing. Crusts should always be removed and wholemeal bread is a healthier option. Check that none of your young guests have nut allergies as some bread is manufactured in factories which process nuts.

Pinwheel sandwiches are a novel way of presenting the humble sandwich. Fill them with some great dairy free fillings such as cucumber and cashew butter or finely grated vegetables and herbs nestled in a bed of soy cream cheese.

Make pinwheels by cutting slices of bread in half (crusts removed). Flatten with a rolling pin. Smother with fillings of your choice and roll up like a sausage roll. Place in the fridge for an hour or two and slice into tiny morsels when your little guests arrive. The perfect size for little fingers and even more enticing when artfully displayed with colourful dairy free sweets or nibbles of fruit.

You can be sure that bread will always rise to the occasion, so why not invest in some cutters to make your sandwiches into tempting shapes such as moons, hearts or stars?
Better still, why not ask the children to help cut out their sandwiches? Not only will they have lots of fun, they will also enjoy sharing their mini snacks with their little friends.

Older children will be drawn to sandwiches which look like animals or funny faces. Use ingredients to make their favourite cat or bunny or just have some fun making funny faces…
