Pizza – Which topping goes best with orange juice?

There is no doubt that pizza is colourful, looks good and is always a popular choice at children’s parties. Try experimenting with different bases such as toasted bread cut into shapes, small scone bases or pita bread.

Whatever toppings you choose, try to make pizzas look fun. So use your imagination and let your creative juices run wild. This simple pizza was made with onion lightly fried in olive oil and a clove or two of crushed garlic. After a further minute a tablespoon of tomato puree was added along with 2 teaspoons of tomato ketchup. A spread was formed with one tablespoon of hot water and the tomato sauce was smoothed across the base. Finally, a generous layer of soy cheese was scattered over the top. This created the perfect canvas for making whatever toppings we desired.

For this funny face you could use sweet corn for the hair, cauliflower tops or grated carrot. We used a black pitted olive which was sliced into two for each eye along with a tiny square of red pepper for each pupil but you could also try using green olives with pimiento, blueberries or peas. A slice of tomato was used for the nose but you could also try a pineapple cube, mushroom or broccoli top. A slither of green pepper looked great for making a happy face but you could also use an asparagus spear, bell pepper ring or even a pineapple ring.

Why not cut out a circle of soy ham for the cheeks or soy bacon or mock pepperoni? You could even add more features such as eyebrows, ears, a moustache, glasses or even earrings! When you have finished making faces, heat the whole ensemble under a grill for a minute or two and cool before serving.

Alternatively why not make open sandwiches into pizzas? This is something the kids will absolutely adore plus you can be a bit devious and sneak in some healthy vegetables for extra nutritional goodness.

You will need:
- Wholemeal or white bread, crusts removed
- A smattering of casein-free soy cheese
- 6 to 8 slices of vegetarian pepperoni
- 2 teaspoons oregano
- 2 to 3 tablespoons of rich tomato pizza sauce

Spread pizza sauce over the bread slices and sprinkle with dairy free cheese, slices of pepperoni and a pinch or two of oregano. Brown under the grill, slice into soldiers, say “cheese” and get ready to put a smile on both your own face and the little guests which have come to visit.
